Physicochemical properties:
White waxy solid, slightly hygroscopic, soluble in alcohols and ethers, partially soluble in water. Relative density: 1.04 (20℃) or 1.014 (60℃). Content is generally not less than 97.5%, hydroxyl value ≥ 535 mg KOH/g, acid value ≤ 5 mg KOH/g.
Properties and Uses:
Hydroxypentylene glycol ester is a special diol containing two primary hydroxyl groups, exhibiting a relatively fast esterification or curing reaction rate, eliminating the need for esterification catalysts. Steric hindrance of the side groups imparts good hydrolytic stability, chemical resistance, and stain resistance to the synthesized polymer. The absence of hydrogen atoms gives the product excellent weather resistance and thermal stability; light-colored polyester resins can be obtained even at synthesis reaction temperatures of 230–240°C. It can partially replace neopentyl glycol or other diols.
This diol is primarily used in the manufacture of polyester resins for coatings, producing resins with good flexibility and weather resistance. It can be used in polyurethane coatings, etc. End applications include automotive paints, coil coatings, powder coatings, high-solids coatings, water-based coatings, hot melt adhesives, tire cord fabric treatment emulsions, ink topcoats, adhesives, etc.
