Colorless to pale yellow transparent liquid, hygroscopic, low toxicity, miscible with water, alcohols, and ethers, sparingly soluble in benzene and chloroform.

Physical Properties and Uses

1,3-Propanediol is a linear primary hydroxyl diol, mainly used in the production of the novel thermoplastic polyester engineering plastic polypropylene terephthalate (PTT). It can also be used in the production of liquid polyester polyols for polyurethanes, acting as a chain extender to improve the thermal stability, hydrolytic stability, and thermal dimensional stability of thermoplastic polyurethanes. In addition, it is used in the production of coatings and adhesives resins, solvents, antifreeze agents, etc., and is also an important intermediate in the synthesis of various drugs and novel antioxidants.

Toxicity

1,3-Propanediol has very low toxicity. The acute oral LD50 in rats is approximately 15 g/kg, and the dermal absorption LD50 in rabbits is >20 g/kg. It is non-irritating to the eyes but causes mild skin irritation.
