Physicochemical properties

Colorless viscous liquid with a slightly pungent odor. Hygroscopic, miscible with water.

1,2-Propanediol is essentially non-toxic. Acute oral toxicity data for rats: LD50 > 5.0 g/kg; dermal absorption toxicity LD50 for rabbits: > 2.00 g/kg.

Properties and uses

1,2-Propanediol is a raw material for unsaturated polyesters, plasticizers, surfactants, emulsifiers, and demulsifiers. In the polyurethane industry, it is used as a raw material for polyester polyols, an initiator for polyether polyols, and a polyurethane chain extender.

Taking advantage of its low toxicity and good solvent properties, 1,2-propanediol can also be used in the food, pharmaceutical, cosmetic, and tobacco industries, as well as in antifreeze, preservatives, and heat transfer fluids.
