Physicochemical Properties

Transparent liquid, miscible with water. Boiling point: 250℃, or 135℃/(1.3KPa), 114℃/(0.53KPa). Freezing point < -50℃, density (25℃): 0.971 g/cm3, viscosity (20℃): 173 mPa.s, flash point (open cup): 143℃, vapor pressure (25℃): 1.7 Pa.

MPD is almost non-toxic; the acute oral LD50 in rats is approximately 8 g/kg.

Properties and Uses

3-Methyl-1,5-pentanediol is a branched fatty alcohol containing two primary hydroxyl groups. It is a low-viscosity diol with a unique molecular structure. It can be used to produce polyester plasticizers, polyester polyols for coatings and polyurethanes, and as a polyurethane chain extender. The resulting polyester has low viscosity and good low-temperature flexibility.

Because 3-methyl-1,5-pentanediol contains side methyl groups, soft TPU can be produced without the addition of plasticizers. The elastomer has excellent stain resistance and durability, good adhesion to substrates, and can be used to manufacture transparent films, rollers, elastic sheets, spandex, shoe soles, coatings, laminating adhesives, waterborne polyurethanes, microporous foams, etc.
