Physical Properties:

1,8-Diazabicyclo[5.4.0]undec-7-ene (DBU) is a strong organic base reagent. The pure product is a colorless or light yellow transparent liquid, easily discolored by light, hygroscopic and corrosive, easily soluble in water, and also soluble in organic solvents such as ethanol and toluene. Its vapor is toxic.

Characteristics:

1,8-Diazabicyclo[5.4.0]undec-7-ene (DBU) belongs to the bicyclic amidine compounds. It is used as a catalyst in the polyurethane industry. It is a highly active, low-odor gel catalyst, mainly used in applications requiring strong gel catalysis, including formulations containing cycloaliphatic or aliphatic isocyanates, because their activity is not as high as aromatic isocyanates, thus requiring a very strong catalyst. The catalytic activity of DBU increases significantly with increasing temperature. For example, at 70℃, the catalytic rate constants of DBU for isocyanate-alcohol and isocyanate-water reactions are 67 times and 35 times higher than at 25℃, respectively, while the catalytic activity of the commonly used bicyclic tertiary amine catalyst triethylenediamine increases to only 5 times and 6 times, respectively. DBU catalyst can be used in formulations for integral skin foam, microcellular elastomers, and rigid foams.

Uses:

The main use of 1,8-Diazabicyclo[5.4.0]undec-7-ene (DBU) is as an excellent organic base deacidification agent in drug synthesis. It can replace organic bases such as triethylamine, N,N-dimethylaniline, pyridine, and quinoline, and is widely used in organic synthesis and semi-synthetic antibiotics, achieving satisfactory results in dehydrohalogenation reactions. It is widely used in the production of semi-synthetic cephalosporin antibiotics, such as the reaction of ammonia and dichloroethane in the presence of DBU to produce piperazine. It can also be used as an epoxy resin hardener, a rust inhibitor, and can be formulated into high-performance corrosion inhibitors, and used as a catalyst in other chemical reactions. Diazabicyclo[5.4.0]undec-7-ene (DBU) is used in the manufacture of semi-synthetic cephalosporin antibiotics, and also in the preparation of deacidifying agents, rust inhibitors, and high-grade corrosion inhibitors.
